The saying that there is ability in disability comes alive in a gentleman who has defied all odds and has risen to become a super model in spite of being deaf.
Ebenezer Kabutey Otumfuo known as Kabby was born on 28th August, 1990 Klagon near Lashibi in a suburb of Tema west.
He is a model and student of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW). A model with Coxy’s Models,Winneba, he started modelling in 2015 when he was 25.
A proud Ghanaian, he loves modelling, singing motivational songs and acting.
At age 2, he was paralysed by an illness and recovered but lost his hearing as a result.
He had basic education at Tetteh Ocloo State School for the Deaf at Adjei Kojo-Tema from 1995 to 2005 but transferred to Cape Coast School for the Deaf from 2005 to 2009.
He had his secondary education at Senior High/Technical School for the Deaf in Mampong-Akuapem in the Eastern Region and is now studying Special Education at University of Education, Winneba in the Central region. He can read and write and normally uses whatsapp to communicate with people.
He has an interpreter who he takes along to his shoots and events to help him communicate with others.
He came across his model trainer online who encouraged him to sign up with Yafan Modelling Agency and has not looked back then.
His body measurements are; height- 5’6, Bust-38, Waist- 28, Hip-32, Shoe size-40/41, Weight-69kg, Eye-Brown and Hair-Black.
He loves watching movies with English Subtitle, training runway, visiting a few deaf friends, watching new model photos, studying his course subjects, laughing a lot, taking pictures and motivational singing.
When asked how he is able to perceive songs, he said he uses lip reading as he has no level of hearing at all.
He has featured a few shows such as Hi5 Photoshoot Festival Show at East Legon and Coxy’s Models fashion Show at Winneba.
With a passion for excellence, he won third in a competition in the Yafan Models Club and have been awarded a certificate of competence in the Yafan models club.
Some prestigious photographers he has worked with are SB Photography, Studio One Photography, Ansah Photography from Yafan Models, and Sweet Photography . He has plans to shoot with G-Shot Photography, Omoba Alayor Photography, and Ghanaiane Photography in the near future.
His dream is to help promote deaf modelling in Africa and eradicate stigmatization against persons with disabilities. He also has plans to join Philus, a modelling agency in Tema that promotes models with disabilities.
According to him, he is inspired by Papa Yaw, Cindy Efam, Greg Jones, Sylvester Serene Ocansey, Glenn, Lex-Gh, Merizdemodel, Kenny Jim Parku and Michel Ellis. He added that these people love and understand him and are a great source of encouragement to him.
In his own words, this is what he had to say " I have a lot of dreams for the future. For the career, I really want to be a model, singer motivational songs, and sometime acting. Being a model, singer, and an actor are dreams for me from childhood. I am practicing to improve myself everyday. I have faith that dreams can come true. My favourite quote says; Modelling is the best because you have to look hot, which comes easy to me, you know. I am blessed with that. My encouragement is don’t compare yourself to others. Compare yourself to the person from yesterday."
